Interview tips for the nervous candidate

keepcalmJob interviews are difficult and stress inducing for the best of us, but it can be particularly nerve racking for those with a very shy or nervous demeanour. When we think about job interviews, it’s easy to get flustered and sweaty palmed while proceeding to pull our hair from its roots. It can be a great comfort to look at your interview as more of an informal meeting with your potential employer, rather than a brutal interrogation of your very being.

Some could argue there are a few industries that may hold your more reserved candidates. IT professionals are a lovely bunch of people but can be quite shy on occasion. This may lead to a devastatingly stressful headspace – which can be a thing of the past if you close your eyes, take a deep breath and follow the advice below.

Preparation is key

The more that you prepare for your interview, the more likely that you will be able to answer the questions easily and confidently. That way you can avoid the possibility of an unexpected question heading your way and a great silence looming. Research the company and read the job description carefully.

Take a portfolio

If you take a portfolio to your interview – not only will this showcase your very best attributes, it will draw the interviewer’s attention away from you to your work. The interviewer will be more interested in looking at your previous experience and the details of your work, rather than looking into your eyes while trying to suss you out.

Ooze authority

You want your interviewer to see you as confident, right? There are a few simple tricks that you can use to give this impression. Make sure that you sit up straight – if you’re slouching, you’ll find it harder to project an air of authority. Try not to fidget and keep your hands still – playing with your hair or scratching your face are all signs of someone who is uncomfortable or nervous. Be sure to make eye contact with your interviewer as much as possible (without looking creepy!). Eye contact builds trust between people on a subconscious level and will help you to connect with your interviewer and show them that you’re approachable.

Ask questions

Make sure that you have a number of questions prepared to ask your interviewer. Nervous people tend not to instigate communication very easily. If you have questions prepared, you’ll be more likely to ask some at the end of the interview – not only will you look like you’re very interested in the company and have taken the time to research it, but you come across as someone who oozes self-confidence.

Think positive

When you think positively, your whole attitude changes and others will recognise that you’re a friendly and warm individual to be around. So don’t dwell on the interview and head straight on down to negativity street before you even get there… remain calm, take a deep breath and realise the strengths that you possess.

If you are a shy or nervous person, simply take the time to put these steps into action and you should feel better about your interview in no time. You may feel your heart beating at a thousand beats per minute, but if you prepare and exude confidence, you can’t go too far wrong.

  1. Good tips Karly. Also what you wear and resume facts matters a lot in such interviews. One should be professionally dressed, and should keep only relevant information in their resumes.

  2. If you are a job seeker, then the only advice for you is to remain confident, so that you can get through from the interview process. If you are confident, you would surely make a move to impress the interviewer. In most of the interview’s confidence and knowledge is judged of the candidate. Lastly, your resume and work experience must be up to date. This is another important concern of the interviewer.
